Wuthering Heights Book Report

Wuthering Heights was written by Emily Bronte. This sensational book is about the perplexing love story between Heathcliff and Catherine, along with the tension between residents of the homes Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. The story is told from Nelly Dean’s point of view, who had been a servant of Catherine and her daughter Cathy.

In Wuthering Heights, a man named Lockwood leaves his new home to meet his neighbors four miles away. When a snowstorm occurs, he is stuck at Wuthering Heights with Heathcliff, young Cathy, Joseph, Hareton, and Zillah. He becomes curious about their history, and the next  day, Lockwood asks his housekeeper named Nelly Dean to tell him about it. The majority of the story is from Nelly’s point of view as she tells the new tenant about the history of Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. “Catherine’s face was just like the landscape- shadows and sunshine flitting over it in rapid succession; but the shadows rested longer, and the sunshine was more transient…”  Nelly told Lockwood everything about Heathcliff and Catherine’s love story, but continued the story to tell the story of Catherine’s daughter.

Wuthering Heights has important lessons underneath all of the drama. There are many different terrible things that happen, but Catherine was always against any form of violence and grew into a mature person over time. “But treachery and violence are spears pointed at both ends: they wound those who resort to them worse than their enemies.” Catherine was always willful, but she grew to be wise. Even Catherine’s daughter Cathy stood up for herself and was very strong willed. Many characters in Wuthering Height can relate to real life people.

I would recommend Wuthering Heights to anyone who enjoys reading classics or complex stories. At some points it can be tricky to understand. This book requires a little extra thought to fully understand it’s meaning, but I think that it’s definitely worth taking the time.
